More than 100,000 cases involving driving under the influence of alcohol were reported across the country during the 2016 UEFA European Championship from June 11 to July 11.
The Ministry of Public Security said 3,706 people were caught between 6 am and 9 am during the event.
Games in later stages of the tournament typically start at 3 am Beijing time and may not end until 5 or 6 am.
The number of drunken driving cases usually increases during major sporting events and holidays. During the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, 34,000 cases were reported.
Driving under the influence of alcohol was made a criminal offense in May 2011.
Under the revised Criminal Law and Road Safety Law, a person can drive legally with a blood alcohol level of 20 milligrams per 100 milliliters or less. Above that is a crime. Blood alcohol up to 80 mg will result in fines and license suspension. A driver is considered drunk, and detention is required for alcohol content above 80 mg per 100 ml.
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress will review enforcement of the Road Safety Law in August and September. Inspectors will be sent to eight provinces and cities to see whether the law has been observed. The committee has asked the people's congresses in 23 administrative regions to launch their own reviews.
