Chen Yujun, senior engineer and director of BIM technology center of Tsinghua University Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd.
Tsinghua University established the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Technology Center in April, 2010, and Chen Yujun was nominated as its director. At the time of the center’s establishment Chen gave technical support to the pipeline project of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital and some other complicated projects. He used BIM technology to design the projects, with good results. He and Zhuang Weimin, president of Tsinghua’s Architectural Design and Research Institute, then participated in the compilation of a national standard for BIM.
As a structural engineer, Chen Yujun was interested in combining BIM with complex structural design. He undertook the R&D work of complex structural analysis programs in 2011. Since complex structural analysis is an interdisciplinary field, requiring knowledge of mechanics, structure, numerical analysis and programming, he taught himself the relevant mechanics and mathematics.
In 2012, the technology center has been doing analysis work for the Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Center. Chen led his team in writing a program in three days to improve precision of the building’s construction.
After that, Chen participated in analysis and design for many complex structural buildings, including Nanning mayor's Mansion, the second phase of the Zhejiang Institute of Buddhism (the Maitreya altar) and the Shijiazhuang Exhibition Center.
By the combination of scientific research, manufacturing and development, Chen Yujun and his team have successfully built an effective system for complex projects and formed a series of sophisticated technical solutions. Chen and his team have shared their ideas through technological reports and lectures to allow more people to benefit from their research results.
