The Beijing New Airport Expressway Project was launched on Nov 30 in Beijing.
“The New Airport Expressway, also known as the South Fifth Ring Airport Expressway, links the south fifth ring’s Tuan River in the east to the new airport in the north. This covers a distance of over 27.7 kilometers with a total investment estimated at 17 billion yuan,” said Zhang Yanze, head of the construction management department.
According to the officials, the expressway is expected to open by the end of 2018 and the traveling time between the city center and the new airport will be shortened to less than30 minutes.
In addition, expressway viaducts throughout will be built at different heights to improve space utilization. A channel line will also be added between the expressway and roads.
Zhang said, “A combination of expressway, road and rail traffic intersections will make its debut with the completion of the project,” adding that land - arable land in particular - could be used rationally and economically in this way.
Two main toll booths to be set up at the north terminal of new airport and between the fifth and sixth ring road. Another two ramp toll booths will be built around Weiyong Road and Pangan Road.
The expressway is expected to extend to the south second ring after completion of the New Airport Expressway's north extension project.
