Chinese officials have urged that unreasonable school fees should be further curbed to ease the burden of students.

Liu Jinping, director of the Supervision Department with the Ministry of Education, said the government has launched a campaign to curb over-charging, which is rampant in parts of the country.

About 1.7 billion yuan (around 212.5 million U.S. dollars) in unreasonable school fees have been charged since 2003, according to Liu.
