In 2005, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC)
incorporated the Law on the Promotion of the Recyclable Economy in its
legislation plan, and charged the Environment and Resources Protection Committee
with drafting it. The committee and relevant departments of the State Council
are currently working on the law, and will submit it to the NPC Standing
Committee for examination in 2007.
China's per capita GDP exceeded US $1,000 in 2003, a significant step towards
the country's goal of building a well-off society. China is currently going
through a "golden development period" and a "period in which social
contradictions are becoming more prominent."
Following the country's
rapid economic development and population growth, social contradictions caused
by inadequate resources are becoming more noticeable. Meanwhile, ecological
construction and environmental protection efforts are being threatened. This
situation means that developing a recyclable economy is of great importance to
China in the 21st century. (For more biz stories, please visit Industry Updates) |
