Light Industry: Protect jewelry fair (Shanghai Daily) Updated: 2006-05-11 14:08
The largest jewelry show in Shanghai opens to the public today, displaying
treasures worth 370 million yuan (US$46.25 million) at the Shanghai New
International Expo Center, Shanghai Morning Post reported.
Shanghai International Jewelry Fair organizers have carried out stricter
measures to ensure the safety of the expensive jewels, including more security
cameras and guards, 24-hour storage services for exhibitors, requiring visitor
registration and mandating ID card checks at the entrance of the exhibition.
At the Shanghai International Jewelry Fair, held at ShanghaiMart in 2004, a
gang of 25 South-Americans stole jewels valued over US$690,000, but were caught
about a week later after authorities tracked them down using ShanghaiMart's
security camera footage. (For more biz stories, please visit Industry Updates)
