Trade: Spending spurs retail sales

Shanghai's retail sales rose 14 percent in April as consumers spent more on dining out, fuel and cars.

Retail sales last month totaled 26.9 billion yuan (US$3.37 billion), the Shanghai Statistics Bureau reported yesterday. The year-on-year growth rate was 2.4 percentage points higher than it was for the same period the year before.

Combined growth in the first four months of this year amounted to 13 percent on sales of 109.38 billion yuan. Shanghai's retail sales expanded 13 percent to 82.4 billion yuan in the first quarter, the bureau said last month.
