Want a baby? Maybe! (CRI) Updated: 2006-05-31 16:25
It may only take minutes for a career woman to decide to buy an expensive
Louis Vuitton handbag. But she may spend years struggling over whether or not to
have a baby. Today delaying pregnancy or simply being a DINK has become the
lifestyle choice for many women. What are their reasons and why is there so much
uncertainty?
More and more would-be mother celebrities seem to be appearing on the covers
of fashion magazines with their pregnant bellies to show motherhood can make
women look glamorous and sexy. But their presence doesn't change the fact that
more women today are choosing to delay pregnancy more than ever before.
According to a survey conducted by the fashion magazine Marie Claire,
77 percent of the over 1000 white-collar women interviewed say they will
consider having a baby only after reaching 30. And all of them say they may even
choose not to have a baby at all. 24 percent of the women cite career as their
main reason.
A 32-year-old media worker named Xiaoyun says when she returned to work after
having her baby everything had changed.
"I was pregnant in 2001. When I went back to work, I not only lost my chances
for promotion but also my original position. And there was no suitable position
left for me. I had to start all over again from a minor position."
And women actually have more misgivings than just career.
26-year-old Daisy is a college teacher who says her ideal life is one without
children.
