IT: Partnership hinge on decision (Shanghai Daily) Updated: 2006-06-15 13:49
NTT DoCoMo Inc, the world's second-largest wireless company, may seek
partners in China after the Chinese government issues licenses for high-speed
networks to expand in the world's biggest mobile phone market.
The government is considering three different standards for its 3G network,
which would allow services such as video conferencing and music downloads. One
of the standards, called W-CDMA, is the same as the platform adopted by DoCoMo
in Japan. China hasn't announced a timetable for issuing 3G licenses.
"We have to see what kind of technology the operators will use," Takeshi
Natsuno, senior vice president of multimedia services at Tokyo-based DoCoMo,
said in an interview broadcast yesterday. "After that, we can decide what kind
of strategic alliance we're going to make." (For more biz stories, please visit Industry Updates)
