The Chinese heavy-duty truck market plummeted by 36.2 percent in 2005 after experiencing a growth spurt of 44.96 percent in 2004, said an industry source.
Factors that hindered the development of the heavy truck sector included central government policies intended to rein in overheating industries like real estate and coal and the policy to curb truck overload, according to Li Qingsheng of Beijing Runew, an auto marketing and consultation company.
Banks' tightening of credit controls also worked against truck sales in 2005. Vehicle loans accounted for a maximum of 60 percent of heavy-duty truck purchases, especially extra-heavy trucks.
