Agriculture: GM corn passes tests (Shenzhen Daily) Updated: 2006-08-10 14:34
China Xiwang Sugar Holdings Co Ltd said Tuesday its US genetically
modified (GM) corn cargo had passed quarantine tests, confirming China would not
stand in the way of the grain¡¯s imports in large vessels.
A manager from Xiwang, one of China¡¯s top corn sweetener producers based in
the northern province of Shandong, told reporters the company was moving the
corn to the factory yesterday.
The cargo, some 50,000 tons, arrived in China on July 28. Xiwang ordered the
shipment in May, marking the country¡¯s first major corn imports in years. It
followed imports of a few hundred tons in containers. (For more biz stories, please visit Industry Updates)
