The Beijing bureau of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) said lately that the city has seen a lower rate of severe accidents among the school responsibility insurance subscribers last year, compared with 2005. The scope of the school responsibility insurance system will be extended from primary and middle schools to colleges this year.

The school responsibility insurance is a type of insurance policy, bought by the school for its students. Beneficiaries are compensated if accidents happen to them in the school yard or on campus. It is similar to public responsibility insurance. Since 2003, public kindergarden, primary and middle schools began purchasing this type of insurance.

On top of providing insurance products and services to the schools, insurers and brokers have carried out regular professional training for their own staff, online promotion and a notification program on important issues. Schools, students and parents enhanced recognition and risk prevention, according to CIRC. As a result, the frequency of accidents was 30 percent lower in 2006 than in 2007.
