The automobile industry is expected to become the third industry worth 100 billion yuan (US$12.91 billion) for East China's Anhui Province in the 11th Five-Year Program period (2006-2010) after the machinery and light industries, according to the provincial government.

"During the 2006-2010 period, we are confident that Anhui's auto output and sales will exceed one million units," Sun Zhigang, vice-governor of Anhui, said recently.

In 2006 two leading domestic automakers based in Anhui, Chery Automobile Co Ltd and Jianghuai Automobile Co Ltd, helped boost the province's auto sales to 552,000 units, rising 35.7 percent from a year ago, Sun said.
