Demand for MPV expands

Multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) are more and more welcomed and accepted by Chinese consumers. According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China sold 5,176,000 million passenger cars in 2006, up 30.02 percent year on year. Among which, 191,100 MPVs were sold, up 22.62 percent from 2005.

The MPV market will change in 2007 and more and more new MPV models will enter the market. In 2006, only around 10 MPV models were available on the market, including the Buick GL8, Odyssey, Dongfeng Future, JAC Refine, Mazda Premacy, Shanghai Volkswagen Touran, FAW Volkswagen Caddy and Jinbei Grace. All of these models recorded good performance on the market.

Shanghai General Motors Corp sold nearly 38,000 units of the Buick GL8 in 2006, up 40 percent year on year, ranking first on the MPV market. The sales of Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co Ltd's Odyssey reached 36,000 units, up 28.6 percent year on year and ranked second on the MPV market.
