Full steam ahead for plastic parts in auto industry

Plastic auto parts, which are increasingly applied in developed auto manufacturing countries, have bright prospects in China as the country's auto industry is roaring ahead, industry sources have noted.

Plastic usually accounts for 10 to 15 percent of a car's gross weight in foreign countries, compared to 65-70 percent for steel, 5-10 percent for aluminum and 2-4 percent for glass, and the figure for the use of plastic is expected to rise to 20 percent in 10 years, industry experts noted.

By 2010, China's demand for plastic materials for the auto industry is expected to reach 722,000 tons, said Zhou Yiping from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
