HK's retail sales value up 18.7%

The retail sales value in April in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region rose 18.7 percent compare with the same month of last year to HK$22.8 billion ($2.92 billion) on the back of sustained strong consumer confidence, Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department said on Monday.

The sales volume of electrical goods and photographic equipment rose by 25.1 percent. This was followed by apparel, up 18.8 percent, according to the statistics released by the department.

After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period the retail sales volume grew 11.6 percent.

Taking this year's first four months together, total retail sales surged 17.8 percent in value or 11.6 percent in volume.

Meanwhile, the sales volume of miscellaneous consumer durable goods fell 4.3 percent.

Based on the seasonally-adjusted series the retail sales volume rose 2.2 percent in the quarter ending April compare with the preceding three-month period, the department said.
