Taiwan's Alishan and Sun Moon Lake are favorite tourist destinations sought out by Chinese mainland netizens, according to an online survey carried out by Ctrip.com, China's major online travel service company.

The inaugural tour group from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan is scheduled to set off on June 4.

Scenic resorts Alishan and Sun Moon Lake topped the ranking in the survey with a vote rate of 87 percent. City sightseeing ranked second with a vote rate of 62 percent, including night markets in Taiwan, followed by historical sites and cultural landscapes with vote rates of 54 percent and 41 percent respectively.

Tour packages will focus on round-Taiwan routes at the initial stages of opening up. Classic attractions, such as Alishan, Sun Moon Lake, National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taipei 101 Building and Kaohsiung will be included.

The company said most netizens expect Taiwan tours to cost less than 5,000 yuan ($729.36), followed by those who expect between 5,000 yuan and 7,000 yuan. Only 20 percent want to pay over 8,000 yuan.

However, 8-day or 10-day Taiwan packages available on the market now are tagged at 8,000 to 10,000 yuan.

The opening of the weekend chartered flights between the mainland and Taiwan may reduce air fares, but package prices won't slip in the short run as shopping or self-paid items are not included in the packages, said analysts at the company.

For now, and in addition, most netizens seem to have a wait-and-see attitude towards Taiwan tours, according to the survey.
