White-collar worker jailed for buying stolen goods
(China Daily)
Updated: 2008-08-07 16:27 A businesswoman surnamed Gao was sentenced recently to two years' imprisonment in Shanghai for buying stolen property, Oriental Morning Post reported. Gao bought luxury garments and accessories from a gang of thieves who had stolen them from Shanghai department stores. Her intention was to present them as gifts to company clients. The gang of four jobless men from Nanjing, Jiangsu province, stole goods worth 158,000 yuan ($23,000) on 15 occasions this February within the space of 16 days. Their mode of operation was for one of the gang members to break away as soon as they entered a store and approach a sales assistant, using his 1.78-m height to block her view of his fellows as they artfully lifted and left with the loot. The thieves were eventually caught in the Shanghai Isetan Department Store. Gao and three thieves received the applicable sentences. One is still at large.
