Caterpillar Inc said it will establish an R&D center in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, with the first phase set for completion at the end of 2009.

The facility will serve Caterpillar's ventures in China and the rest of the Asia Pacific.

Caterpillar currently has China-based R&D centers in Qingdao and Xuzhou.

In a statement, the company said these two centers are expected to expand. It provided no details.

The company added it will increase capacity at Shandong Engineering Machinery, one of its domestic assets, with a multi-million dollar investment.

To support capacity expansion in China, Caterpillar will purchase additional land and launch construction next year.
