Beijing plans to invest 7 billion yuan on power network construction by the end of 2010, according to the municipal commission of development and reform.

The municipal government has invested 400 million yuan on building power transmission lines this year, and local power companies have invested 2.8 billion yuan, said Luo Yong, deputy director of the electric power management department under the commission.

Compared with 2005, the city's power transmission capacity has seen a rise of 25 percent.

To meet demand during the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing upgraded its power supply infrastructure in the past two years, adding over 100 transformer stations and nearly 1,000 km of power transmission lines, according to State Grid Corp of China (SGCC).

SGCC earlier said it plans to more than double its investment for the next two years to around 1 trillion yuan for power grid construction nationwide.

The planned investment is yet to be approved by the State Council, or the cabinet.

SGCC spokesman Lu Jian earlier said the company had already arranged 12 billion yuan in the fourth quarter for the development of urban and rural power supply in the country.

Analysts said power construction could directly benefit industries such as metallurgy, building materials and machinery manufacturing, and would promote investment, consumption and trade.
