CNNIC: 234m Chinese get news via Internet

More than 230 million Chinese people rely on the Web to read news, underling the Internet portal are further eroding into traditional media's turf, according to a quasi-government organization.

A report to be issued by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) this afternoon shows 234 million people surfed the Internet to read or watch news by the end of 2008.

That is much higher than an estimate made by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).

CASS, a top academic institution, said in mid-December that 206 million Chinese people rely on the Internet as their main source of news.

In 2007,155 million Chinese Internet users relied on the Web to read news, accounting for 73.6 percent of the total Internet population, according to CNNIC.

The CNNIC report also said the number of Chinese bloggers hit 162 million by the end of 2008.
