The rise was largely due to the strong sales performance of its flagship model, the S-Class, which rose 26 percent year-on-year, allowing China to overtake the United States as the world's largest market for the high-end model.

So far Mercedes-Benz has expanded its S-Class family to 10 models in China, providing local customers with the most extensive choice in the top-luxury saloon segment. The S-Class currently has a 41-percent share of the domestic luxury saloon market.

The firm's SUVs also enjoyed fast growth in January, with sales rising 80 percent year-on-year. Two fuel price cuts over the past two months helped the SUV segment maintain its rapid growth in January.
