Guangdong Mobile investing 6b yuan for 3G network expansion

China Mobile Guangdong branch plans to expand coverage of its 3G mobile phone networks, based on the TD-SCDMA standard, to cover the South China province within this year and sign up 500,000 TD-SCDMA users.

"Our company will invest 6 billion yuan ($877 million) to build 6,300 TD-SCDMA base stations in 2009," China Business News cited Xu Long, general manager of China Mobile Guangdong branch, as saying.

Guangdong branch has spent more than 5 billion yuan in developing TD-SCDMA, the homegrown 3G standard. In 2008, the branch built 4,600 TD-SCDMA base stations and purchased 100,000 domestic terminals.

Guangdong branch is the largest provincial branch of China Mobile. In 2008, its business revenue increased by 9 percent year-on-year to 64 billion yuan with more than 80 million users.
