By Yu Hongyan (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2009-03-05 19:25 A total of 14 computer makers have won a bid to take part in the Chinese mainland's rural computer subsidy program, according to a notice jointly released by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Commerce on March 5. The selected bidders include two foreign brands, Dell and Hewlett Packard, and Taiwan's Acer, with the rest from the mainland such as Lenovo, Haier and Hasee. These computer manufacturers will provide 183 models for the program, pricing their products lower than 3,500 yuan ($511), with one manufacturer from Chongqing pricing its desktop model at a paltry 1,998 yuan. The mainland extended a subsidy program nationwide on Feb 1 for rural purchases of home appliances and computers. Twenty-one PC makers submitted bids for the program on Feb 19. Taiwan's Asus and BenQ did not make the cut. (For more biz stories, please visit Industries)
