Handset shipments reached 343.4 million in the last three months of 2008, a decline of 1.8 percent compared with the previous quarter, said Analysys.

Shipments of GSM handsets plunged 4.3 percent quarter-by-quarter to 322 million, as consumers postponed their purchasing plans on the eve of the country's 3G era.

CDMA handset shipments surged 49.3 percent to 2.15 million in the quarter. The robust growth was boosted by China Telecom’s push of its mobile service.

China Telecom said earlier that it would purchase 50 million CDMA handsets this year, including 20 million 3G mobile phones.
