Volkswagen recalled 8,680 Touareg vehicles in China after discovering that a body structure defect posed a danger to people outside the vehicle, said China's quality supervisor Friday.

According to the State Administration of Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), the recall, which starts from July 20, covers imported Touaregs manufactured from November 25, 2006, to January 21, 2009.

The fastening struts on the rear spoiler were prone to cracking, causing the spoiler to come loose and drop off without warning, said the AQSIQ.

This could injure people outside the vehicle or pose a danger to other vehicles.

Volkswagen and its dealers will check the struts and install wedges to reinforce the rear spoiler free of charge.
