49,000 tons of goods retrieved from Moscow's closed market
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2009-08-19 13:34 Around 49,000 tons of goods have been retrieved from the Cherkizovsky market by Tuesday, local media reported. Russia's biggest wholesale market was closed down in late June by the Russian government to crack down on smuggling. Vans had been used to transfer around 49,000 tons of goods from the Cherkizovsky market, an official from the east district of Moscow, Irena Sizonova, was quoted as saying by the Itar-Tass news agency.
"The whole work should go more than four months," Alexander Ushakov, a local operator at the market, said. Russian police abruptly shut down the nearly 300-hectare market on June 29, after the Russian Federal Supervision Service for Consumer Rights Protection and People Welfare disclosed various illegal operations in the market.
