Indonesia and China will cooperate in management and certification of forest products to ensure legal wood trading between them to meet with rules on certification of origin under the US Lacey Act, a media reported in J akarta Friday.

Director General of Forest Product Development in the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry Hadi Daryanto quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying that the two countries had agreed to sign the Mou on the cooperation.

The cooperation would include exchange of data on imports and exports of woods products, and exchanges between the government officials to learn about product management and certification, he said.

"China appreciates we have adopted certification of forest and forest products and wants to learn from us how to strengthen implementation of sustainable management of forest and forest-based industries,"said Daryanto.

The Indonesian government has introduced a new system of certifying the country's forest management and wood products enabling it to benefit from the Lacey Act in the US, which requires all importers and exporters to specify the origins of their products.

China has become one of the world's largest importers of wood products from Indonesia, Russia, African countries and Solomon island.
