Mainland visitors to HK up 21.6% during holiday

HONG KONG - During the three-day Labor Day holiday which ended on Monday, Hong Kong's visitor arrivals from the Chinese mainland reached 303,637, representing an increase of 21.6 percent over the same period last year, according to the latest figures by Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) on Tuesday.

In particular, arrivals on 30 April broke the single-day mainland arrival record at 122,893.

The continued growth of the mainland economy, as well as the greater travel sentiment among mainland visitors, which generated by the appreciation of the renminbi, were believed to be the main cause of the encouraging result, said James Tien, Chairman of HKTB.

Among the overall mainland arrivals, three quarters travelled to Hong Kong under the Individual Visit Scheme, up 25.5 percent year-on-year. Of these, around 30 percent were Shenzhen residents visiting with multiple-entry endorsement, 46.5 percent more than last year.
