SHENYANG - Over one fifth of the world's swimwear is produced by the northeastern coastal city of Huludao, according to a city official.

The city in Liaoning province produces 150 million swimsuits annually, more than one third of the swimwear manufactured in China, while China produces 70 percent of the world's share, said Sun Zhaolin, secretary of Huludao City Committee of the Communist Party of China, at the ongoing First China (Huludao Xingcheng) International Swimsuit Festival.

The annual output exceeds five billion yuan ($781 million) and the city's famous brands make up more than one fifth of the world's swimsuit share, Sun said.

The products are exported to more than 50 countries and regions around the world, and its annual export volume reaches 100 million yuan ($15.6 million), he said.

More than 350 swimwear companies with 50,000 employees are in the city, which is the result of a 20-year effort by the government to establish the city as "China's Swimwear Capital," as well as the "World' Swimsuit Industrial City," Sun said.
