HK suspends poultry imports from Liaoning for 3 weeks

HONG KONG - The Center for Food Safety of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China Thursday suspended the import of poultry products, including eggs and frozen poultry, from northeast Liaoning province of the Chinese mainland for three weeks.

The move was implemented due to a confirmed case of avian influenza H5N1 in Dalian, Liaoning, from which about 28,000 tons of frozen poultry and 103 million poultry eggs were imported last year.

The center said the Hong Kong government has developed a zonal approach policy as a general guideline in dealing with different outbreak scenarios in Guangdong and other provinces.

In the event of a confirmed case of avian influenza poultry infection in any province outside Guangdong, the import of poultry products from that province will be suspended for at least 21 days.
