Otis Elevator Company, the world's largest manufacturer of elevators and escalators, launched an elevator safety education program in primary schools in Qingdao recently. The campaign is aimed at enhancing public education awareness and encouraging children to use safe elevator and escalator practices.
In 2012, Otis carried out a "safety elevator" campaign nationwide covering 18 cities and more than 1,000 schools and communities in China.
The rapid economic growth in China along with poor safety measures have increased risks to people's health, especially in remote areas in third or fourth-tier cities.
Xie Weiheng, New Equipment Operation Director, Beijing Zone, Otis Elevator (China) Investment Co Ltd, said the company is specifically working to educate and raise awareness of children about safely using elevators as they are a vulnerable group.
About 23,000 elevators and escalators have been installed in Qingdao by the end of 2013, according to the Bureau of Safety Supervision of Special Equipment.
