CHICAGO - General Motors (GM) is recalling more than 6,000 big vans and SUVs on the concerns that their steering could fail.

The steering gear pitman shaft may not have been properly hardened, which could break and cause a loss of steering, reported Chicago Tribune on Sunday, quoting The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as saying.

The problem was discovered in testing by the company that makes the gear shafts. GM says no crashes or injuries have been reported.

The affected vehicles include certain 2012 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana vans, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL SUVs.

The recall is expected to begin April 4 and GM dealers will inspect the steering gear shaft and replace it if necessary.
