Editors note: At the ongoing Auto Shanghai 2013 exhibition, BMW is premiering one concept model for the first time worldwide, one concept model in Asia and several of its most advanced models for the first time in China. The following is a roundup of some of the highlighted models that will be on display.
BMW Concept X4
A concept model that shows the company's foresight, the BMW X4 will make its world premiere at the Shanghai auto show.
It inherits the fluent exterior design of the BMW X6, while the headlights, front face and the rear lights are derived from the BMW 3 Series.
The arched back of the concept model is reminiscent of the BMW X6, while the sheet-metal styling borrows from the design of the BMW 4 Series.
Although its exact engine power and displacement has not yet been revealed, the BMW Group said the Concept X4 opens a window into the future expansion of the BMW X family by combining the rugged looks of a BMW X model with the sporty aura of the brand's Coupes.
BMW New 3 Series Gran Turismo
BMW is opening up an all-new segment with its new 3 Series Gran Turismo, which will make its Asian debut at the show. It features the same key characteristics as the BMW 3 Series, including the same body proportion as well as frameless glass doors and a spacious cabin.
Seats of the GT are raised by 59 mm, enabling the driver and passengers to have a better view of the road. It also provides spacious legroom for passengers in the back seat.
The GT offers three variants. The BMW 335i Gran Turismo is equipped with a top-notch six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, while the BMW 328i Gran Turismo and the BMW 320i Gran Turismo are equipped with another four-cylinder engine.
Coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the engines can generate peak power of 225 kW.
Light alloy materials are largely used on the suspension system. Together with the electric power steering system, the light body and balanced wheelbase distribution gives the GT excellent handling, agility and controllability.
It has a stretched wheelbase of 2,920 mm and a 17-inch light-alloy wheel hub, guaranteeing stability during driving as well as comfort for passengers.
Thanks to the BMW Efficient Dynamics strategy, the GT can improve fuel efficiency while still maintaining engine power. If it is switched to ECO PRO mode, the car can cut fuel use by another 20 percent on the basis of existing 3 Series models.
It also contains special equipment options, such as ConnectedDrive Services with BMW Online and apps, intelligent emergency calling, concierge services, Internet, and real-time traffic information.
