BEIJING - American automaker Ford will recall 25,802 of its Edge sport utilities vehicles (SUVs) in China from Aug 25 due to defective assembly, China's top quality watchdog said Wednesday.

The recall involves some imported Edge 2.0L vehicles manufactured between Sept 2, 2010 and Nov 29, 2013, as well as Edge 3.5L cars made on Nov 5, 2013, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

In some of the above-mentioned cars, the circlip that retains the right-hand half-shaft to the countershaft may not have been fully seated during assembly, which may lead to loss of drive function in extreme cases, the statement said.

If the gearshift is placed at "park" without the handbrake being used, the vehicles could roll away, increasing risk of collisions, it said.

Ford China will examine the involved vehicles and eliminate potential hazards free of charge.
