Industrial Bank approved to run card centerIndustrial Bank Co has cleared another hurdle towards operating its credit card center in Shanghai. China's banking regulator has granted a financial license to the Fujian Province-based bank, the Shanghai Bureau of the China Banking Regulatory Commission said yesterday.

With the license, the credit card center will run as a separate entity with independent operation. Four banks - Agricultural Bank of China, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, Bank of Shanghai and China Merchants Bank - have a license already to run a credit card center in Shanghai.

The four players had a bad loan ratio of less than two percent in the first quarter. The four had more than 8.56 million cards in circulation at the end of last year. The transaction value topped 85 billion yuan (US$11.1 billion).

Shanghai-listed Industrial Bank set up its credit card center in the city as an internal entity in mid-2004.
