The company plans to launch a new notebook platform codenamed "puma", which excels in high-definition display, video play, power-efficiency, security and connection, he revealed.

"We will offer exceptional visual performance and power-efficient mobility," Mr. McAfee pledged.

Power-efficiency seems to have become an important focus of AMD, especially in its server products.

John Fruehe, Worldwide Business Development Manager for Server/Workstation products, said they have achieved good performance-per-watt efficiency through a series of innovations, including independent Dynamic Core Technology, AMD CoolCore™ Technology, dual dynamic power management, and low-Power DDR2 Memory.

Another talking point was AMD's virtualization technology which provides server users automatic power state adjustment based on the activity of different applications, thus offering big power savings.

John also looked excited about their quad-core Opteron processor for its performance-per-watt leadership, most relevant datacenter innovations for energy-efficiency, virtualization, investment protection and performance.

A 4-way system powered by the next generation 45nm quad-core Opteron codenamed "Shanghai" was also demonstrated.

Krishna Anne, senior director of strategy of accelerated computing, addressed the innovations on AMD accelerated computing.

"In the future, AMD envisions APUs that include a varying mix of CPU cores (Scalar Processors – X86), Vector cores (like GPU Cores) and fixed function accelerator cores on-chip,",he told the forum.

By combining the optimum mix of CPU cores with different types of on-chip and off-chip accelerators, platforms can be better tailored to accelerate the types of software a particular end-user segment cares most about, he added.

AMD is pro-actively working with the software community to develop and introduce new software programming tools for AC environments, according to him.
