Huaneng Changchun Biomass Power Plant, Huaneng's first biomass power plant, settled in Changchun, Jilin province on April 26, 2008.

Expected to be operational by August 2009, the plant has an installed capacity of 50,000 kw and has received a total investment of 300 million yuan ($42.84 million). It is designed to generate as much as 180 million kwh of electricity annually after its completion.

The biomass-fired power uses crop straw as the main fuel for generation. It will consume 200,000 tons of straw annually, equivalent to savings of 85,000 tons of coal every year. Meanwhile, the heat produced by burning straw will provide heat for 1.8 million square meters. The energy efficiency rate could be as high as 90 percent.

Crop straw previously was burned on farmlands, causing resource waste and air pollution, according to deputy general economist Li Hui at Huaneng Jilin Power Co Ltd. Farmers will make 50 million yuan annually selling crop straw for use at the power plant, and all burned crop straw ashes will be returned to farmers as fertilizer.
