Updated: 2008-05-23 11:24 ProLogis Inc, a Colorado developer of distribution centers worldwide, has two major deals in the Pearl River Delta area of China. ProLogis said Thursday it will build a 2 million-square-foot industrial park on 102 acres in Guangdong Province. The park will be called ProLogis Park Zhuhai, and will offer access to port cities such as Zhuhai, Macao and Jiuzhou. The developer gave no timetable for the park's construction. At its ProLogis Park Sanshan distribution center in Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, ProLogis has cemented a major lease with third-party logistics provider Guangzhou Hutchison Logistics Co. Hutchison leased 194,000 square feet at the park for the distribution of BMW auto parts throughout the Pearl River Delta area. Guangzhou Hutchison is part of Hutchison Logistics Services Ltd, based in Guangzhou and Shanghai. "BMW required a distribution facility that could provide easy access to the entire region," Qian Jing, Hutchison Logistics Services general manager, said in a statement. The BMW Group -- maker of BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce automobiles -- is based in Munich, Germany. The company leases roughly 1.4 million square feet of space at ProLogis locations across the United States. BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which translates to Bavarian Motor Works in English. Based in Denver, ProLogis is the largest developer, owner and manager of distribution centers in the world with nearly 50 million square feet of properties worth $39 billion. In China alone, ProLogis owns or operates 15.5 million square feet of space that support customers such as Best Buy Co Inc, Nokia Corp, United Parcel Service Inc and Adidas AG.
