Updated: 2009-02-18 15:27 The Ministry of Environmental Protection will launch a large-scale pollution inspection of the Yangtze River later this month, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Monday. The inspection will include 10 major branches of the Yangtze River - the Yalong, Dadu, Min, Tuo, Jialing, Wu, Yuan, Xiang, Han and Gan rivers. The probe, the first of its kind along the whole basin of the 6,300 km-long Yangtze River, will include the monitoring of water quality, especially at sewage outlets, and will also determine the total amount of sewage running into the Yangtze River and the total number of sewage outlets along the river. It will also examine emissions of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen pollutants, both major measurements of water pollution, and investigate illegal discharges from enterprises and urban sewage plants. Those discharging wastewater without proper treatment will be severely punished. (For more biz stories, please visit Industries)
