The mainland and Taiwan need to strengthen economic cooperation more than ever and jointly cope with the global financial crisis, said Zheng Lizhong, vice-minister of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

"Both sides need to enhance trade and industrial cooperation to create a win-win situation," he said at the 13th China Xiamen Machinery and Electronics Exhibition (CXMEE)opened in Xiamen on Wednesday.

The 13th CXMEE consists of 1,970 stalls.

Liu Meikun, vice-director of the CXMEE Organizing Committee, said that the mainland and Taiwan are working on a "comprehensive economic cooperation agreement", which will lead to the establishment of a special economic cooperation mechanism across the Taiwan Straits.
