DHAKA - The contract to build core structure of a Bangladesh mega bridge project will be awarded to a Chinese company.
A high-ranking official of Bangladesh's Ministry of Communications confirmed it to Xinhua Monday.
Bangladesh Communications Minister Obaidul Quader also told reporters that the relevant authorities have selected China Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited after scrutinizing its proposal.
He said the country's cabinet committee on purchase would issue the work order within three weeks after approval.
The Bangladeshi government on June 26 last year launched international bids for construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge.
The Chinese company, which had earlier constructed mega structures including Hangzhou Bay Bridge, has been the only firm to submit their financial proposal.
Quader had earlier said the tender for the construction of the main bridge will be worth 100 billion taka ($1.28 billion).
