Beijing will take lead in executing the fifth stage of the vehicle emission standard (Beijing V Standard) beginning next month, chinanews.com reported Wednesday.

Light gasoline-powered vehicles not conforming to the standard will be forbidden to be sold or register from March 1. The majority of models for sale in many privately-owned brands' 4S shops are still only in line with the National IV Standard.

Among Chery, Great Wall, BYD and other privately-owned brands, less than 10 percent of the models meet the Beijing V Standard, according to Cui Dongshu, assistant secretary of China Passenger Car Association.

Part of the models will be withdrawn from the Beijing market after the implementation of the new standard.
