LISBON - Autoeuropa, a Volkswagen plant near Portuguese capital Lisbon, saw its exports rise by 12 percent to 101,000 units last year thanks to Chinese demand, local media reported on Monday.

The company runs the German carmaker's factory in Palmela, which is around 27 km southeast of Lisbon. Its car sales to the Chinese market rose 62 percent, totalling around 24,000 units, Portuguese daily Publico reported.

The company also sold 30,000 cars to Germany and 10,000 to the United Kingdom last year.

At the start of 2014, the company announced it would produce a new model Volkswagen Scirocco. It said the main destination for these cars would be China, according to Publico,

The German brand even created a specific color to please its Chinese clients, a golden, brownish color which it named "pyramid gold," the newspaper said.
