BEIJING - Ford (China) will recall 1,399 cars in China due to defective fuel pumps and door handles, China's top quality watchdog said on Monday.

The recall involves imported models of the Edge and Explorer, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said in two separate statements on its website.

Defects in the fuel pump of 1,099 Edge 2.0L vehicles manufactured between April 30, 2014 and May 21, 2014 may cause engine failure, AQSIQ said. Additionally, 300 Explorer 3.5L vehicles, produced between Feb 1, 2011 and Nov 30, 2012, may have faulty door handles that could unlock spontaneously, posing a danger to passengers, according to the administration.

The company will start recalling the Edge vehicles from June 26 and the Explorer model from May 29, according to the statements.

Faulty parts in the affected vehicles will be replaced free of charge.
