Weibo taps into mobile gaming

Weibo, the United States-listed Chinese social media platform, has officially tapped into mobile gaming by launching its first game on its new app on Tuesday.

The Beijing-based company that has been dubbed the "Chinese Twitter" added a game center on its latest version of app, which was released on Tuesday. Along with the newly added gaming function, the new Weibo app allows registered users to make comments on movies, food, books as well as other areas related to lifestyle.

Zheng Wei, the vice-manager of Weibo, said that apart from providing high-quality contents to users, Weibo will enrich its offerings on entertainment and services related to people's everyday life, building an ecosystem that can truly integrated with people's mobile life.

More than 70 percent of Weibo's active users access to its platform through its app. Through releasing games, Weibo aims to boost its user loyalty among young people, as 75 percent of China's mobile game players are under the age of 34.

The company said it plans to release one to two new games every month. It is expected to launch a total of 10 games through its app by the end of this year.
