Actress Angelina Jolie has been made an honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth at a private ceremony in Buckingham palace.

Jolie was recognized for her campaigning to end sexual violence in war zones, and for services to UK foreign policy.

She was presented with the insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order, of St Michael and St George.

Jolie is a special envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and co-founded the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative in 2012.

The US actress said at the time that it meant "a great deal to receive an honour related to foreign policy".

She was among 1,149 people to receive an honour for their contribution to British society in the 2014 Queen's Birthday list.
