Xi offers fresh thinking for a new era
Editor's note:
T he Communist Party of China has just concluded its 19th National Congress in Beijing. China Daily asked five prominent experts for their views on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, which was introduced at the congress.General Secretary Xi Jinping said China has embarked on a "new era" in its development while spelling out a two-stage development plan. What do you think of that? What is happening in China that impresses you the most?
I like the two-stage development plan proposed by Xi and believe it is feasible. As Xi said, "It will take the great determination of the whole nation." I am extremely impressed with the country's vigorous and creative approach to innovation. China is an innovation nation.
Xi has pledged to develop a modern economy. What are your expectations for that?
General Secretary Xi Jinping's pledge to develop a modern economy relates again to innovation and the rapid adoption of new technology like big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning, for example.
China is still the world's fastest-growing economy, and millions of people have been lifted out of poverty. What do you feel has been the key to such achievements?
Long-term planning and dedication to infrastructure development, and China's stable political system, have been key to China being the world's fastest-growing economy and lifting millions of people out of poverty.
China has been making efforts to reform and develop the global governance system. How do you think China's experience and wisdom can benefit countries and people around the world?
Chinese capability with infrastructure development and management of major projects can benefit other nations. The Belt and Road Initiative is a tremendous program that will positively influence the development of the global economy. The world needs the kind of leadership General Secretary Xi Jinping is proposing. This is a time for China to exert responsible leadership.
