Liu Hui, a returned scholar from New York, the United States, tampered with his curriculum vitae, working experience and academic achievements, which are published on his personal homepage and was handed into Tsinghua, a prestigious Chinese university.

One of his best theses was also verified to be written by another scholar, whose name abbreviation is the same as Liu Hui, said Fang Zhouzi, a famous Chinese scholar who runs a Website exposing scientific plagiarism and pseudoscience.

Liu later admitted he didn't write the thesis, but attributed his actions to a confusing and difficult job search.

Fang also doubted Liu's working experience as director of a surgical institution in a New York University from 1999 to 2004. Tsinghua accepted Fang's accusation and fired Liu, according to the university news center.

China is drafting and improving regulations regarding scientific and technological evaluation and rewards.

It seeks to avoid anything like South Korea's Hwang Woo-suk scandal. Hwang first stunned the medical world with his ground-breaking research in stem cell - and then stunned the world again when his results were found to have been faked.
