HK pollution kills 1,600 yearly

Aboout 1,600 people die each year in Hong Kong by illnesses related to air pollution, according to a study released yesterday by Hong Kong universities.

The study analyzed records for hospital admissions and deaths from 1995 to 2000, said one of the researchers, A.J. Hedley, an environmental and public health expert at the University of Hong Kong. Hedley said in a presentation that pollution played a role in "1,600 deaths a year, mostly from heart attacks, stroke, pneumonia and other lung diseases."
